Ownership of Antarctica is a funny thing. Back in 1959, the Antarctic Treaty was signed, barring any country from formally claiming a piece of Antarctica. But that has not stopped Argentina from setting up a low-key military base there. We spent a few hours there and got our passports stamped by Argentina (which may well be illegal). In the 1970s, the Argentines flew several pregnant women down to Antarctica just so they could lay claim to having the first people born there, should it ever become legal for countries to own pieces of the continent. Six other nations, including the United States, also have bases and have put in provisional claims. Unfortunately, there is plenty of overlap between what each country thinks it might get. Fortunately, no commercially significant deposits of oil or minerals have been found, so nobody gets too hot and bothered.
