A real central draw in the area is Monterey Market. The market sources a wide variety of produce, much of it locally grown. Many of the best Bay Area restaurants buy their produce here because the quality is so high, the options are so diverse (they often have at least 10 different kinds of mushrooms, peas, chilies, and whatever else is in season). Many small farmers have been able to survive because they have an outlet like this to sell their produce here. But because the sales are direct (farmers often appear in the parking lots to see what they can sell), the prices are as reasonable as shopping at a farmers market (of which there are many in Berkeley). There is even a documentary on the market, which is very sweetly and intelligently done. See: http://www.tangerineman.com/eab.htm for more details and to watch a clip.
