You can take a mine tour. Tradition has it that you bring goodies for the miners – cigarettes, booze, coca leaves and dynamite – a wild combination. Heather didn’t end up going in to the mine due to a combination of extreme claustrophobia combined with waking up repeatedly the night before gasping for air (remember, it’s the highest city in the world). But Rob braved the conditions and climbed through the mines on his hands and knees to see the inside. The conditions are truly dangerous and medieval. On Friday nights the men gather to pray to the god of the mine, a devil nicknamed El Tio (the uncle), in little chapels deep in the mines. They cover them in coca leaves and douse them in alcohol. And then they drink the rest of it, often passing out at the foot of El Tio.
