Chile_210

You may recognize this as Heather’s first famous photo, an aerial view of Pumalín that ran with Rob’s article in the S.F. Chronicle on the Tompkins’ conservation efforts in Chile and Argentina. Chilean conservatives have long fought the establishment of Pumalín, viewing it as a foreign usurpation of national sovereignty. The Chilean government is planning to blast a north-south highway through the park to serve a proposed hydroelectric project farther south; the road would pass from lower left to rear center of this photo. Chilean and U.S. environmental groups are fighting to stop the project.
