Restoration has been a primary focus of all the Tompkins’ projects, since much of the land in Patagonia was intensely overgrazed by the region’s famous sheep. Much like homesteading in the western United States, there was a massive land grab in the mid-1900s in Chile. But unlike the States, much of Patagonia’s land has been deserted since then. This area of Pumalín was restored and now is sustainably grazed and farmed.
